['zæȖgwɪl], Israel, englischer Schriftsteller litauisch-jüdischer Abstammung, * London 14. 2. 1864, ✝ Midhurst (County West Sussex) 1. 8. 1926; war Zionist und Gründer sowie erster Präsident der »International Jewish Territorial Organization«; wurde auch durch seine realistischen Erzählwerke und Dramen über das Leben der armen Londoner Juden bekannt. Der Titel seines Theaterstücks »The melting pot« (1909) wurde zum festen Begriff (»Schmelztiegel«) in der Einwanderungsdiskussion. Er schrieb auch Studien über jüdische Persönlichkeiten sowie über die jüdische Geschichte.
